Course Objectives

The main objective is for participants to acquire a working knowledge of Common Lisp, and in particular to:

• understand the core parts of Common Lisp;
• be able to apply a representative subset of Common Lisp to a range of programming problems;
• be familiar with 'Lisp-like' ways of thinking and good Lisp programming practice; be equipped to learn more of Lisp on their own.

Content

Material is introduced in lectures and demonstrations, and reinforced via the many programming exercises. Topics include:

• Types of data: lists, pairs, numbers, atoms, strings, structures; other types.
• Programming techniques: recursion, iteration, variable binding, flexible parameters, macros, mapping functions.
• Object oriented programming: objects, classes, generic functions, methods; types as classes, the class & type hierarchy
• Programming practice: interactive development, documentation conventions, choice of techniques, choice of representation.

Target Audience

The course is intended for software engineers and other technical specialists, or for project managers who need a strong technical awareness of the capabilities of Common Lisp.

Prerequisites

Experience (2-3 years) in programming in procedural languages. Students need not have a formal background in computer science.
