Ann Macintosh - Short Biography

Ann Macintosh Ann Macintosh is Knowledge Systems Director and Principal Consultant at the Artificial Intelligence Applications Institute (AIAI) at the University of Edinburgh.

She has over twenty years experience in the IT sector. She received a B.Sc from the University of St Andrews in Physics in 1973. After pursuing a research career in Medical Physics at St Bartholomews Hospital, London and the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, she moved into the area of Computer Science. She has been with the University of Edinburgh since 1979 in various IT departments, joining AIAI in 1984. She has an impressive track record in technology transfer and promotion of awareness of knowledge based technology for the benefit of industry. Since joining AIAI she has established it as a prime UK centre for KBS technology transfer.

Ms Macintosh has considerable experience in knowledge management and intelligent workflow. She has been involved in a variety of knowledge management projects for major multi-national clients. Recent client work involves developing a framework for developing Knowledge Asset Road Maps to support strategic knowledge management initiatives. She is interested in developing good practical solutions to business problems and as such is the Programme Chair for the international conference on The Practical Application of Knowledge Management in 1999.

Applied research projects include the Enterprise project which was a major initiative to promote the use of knowledge-based systems in enterprise modelling, aiming to support organisations effectively in the Management of Change. This £2.6m collaborative project was part funded under the UK government's "Intelligent Systems Integration Programme". She is also the co-investigator on TBPM - Task-Based Process Management, which is funded by EPSRC under the Systems Engineering Business Process Change programme.

Ms Macintosh is a reviewer for the European Commission on the ESPRIT programme and is the Vice Chairman of the BCS Special Interest Group in Expert Systems (SGES). She has been on the Programme Committees of a number of major international AI conferences in recent years. These include: Chairman of the BCS ES'93 and ES'94 conferences, Applications Programme Chair of the BCS ES'95, ES'96 and ES'97 conferences in Cambridge, UK. Member of the programme committee for ISMICK'94 and ISMICK'95 Compiegne, France and ISMICK'96, Rotterdam, the Netherlands and ISMICK'97. She was the Tutorial Chair for ECAI 98 and is currently on the Organising Committee of the IJCAI-99 Workshop on Knowledge Management and Organizational Memories.

Ms Macintosh is a Chartered Engineer and a Member of British Computer Society.
