Artificial Intelligence Scientists and futurists have long been entranced by the possibilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) — which would give machines the human ability to learn and evolve. As a result, AI could profoundly change our lives. So what might happen in a world of the software agents, service robots, autonomous vehicles and the semantic web? Guests: Austin Tate professor of knowledge-based systems, University of Edinburgh, and technical director of Artificial Intelligence Applications Institute Wendy Hall president of British Computer Society, and professor of computer science at Southampton University. Professor Wendy Hall has taken part in the Department of Trade and Industry's Cognitive Systems Project Simon Thompson principal research scientist, from BT Exact. James Matthews founder of the web magazine Generation 5 Geoff Pegman from the company RURobots Our reporter James Silver also visited the Think Tank Museum in Birmingham to meet Professor Noel Sharkey, senior media research fellow at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, who created emo — the "emotional" robot.
