In order to illustrate the need for a formal, abstract account of knowledge life cycles and to show the advantage such an account yields, we shall analyse a real knowledge-engineering scenario that our colleagues encountered here at The University of Edinburgh. It consists of the life cycle of an ontology for ecological meta-data, called Ecolingua [1,2].
