Subject: Re: Stol Date: Mon, 18 Mar 96 07:17 EST From: David Ritter To: Austin Tate Austin, Here they are, I think it flies better than some VStol. Good luck Dave Note. This is a list of changes I made to Chris Evans flight model of the X-wing Starfighter. The list was downloaded from Austin Tate's SuperCar page. These flight changes are a compromise and far from perfect. I think it flies ok considering the limitations of FS5.1 and Flight Shop. Flight Notes. The flaps on this model are even more powerful than before. The fully deployed positions should not be used when airspeeds are above 50 knots. When flying this flight model, if full power is used for takeoff, I recommend retracting gear and flaps as soon as possible after liftoff. I have been using full flaps for very short takeoff rolls. If power is applied slowly the aircraft will still lift off very quickly and pitchup forces can be controlled with some forward stick pressure. I have been using a power setting of less than one third throttle until the flaps have been retracted half way up. Then I have been slowly adding power to full as the remaining flaps are retracted. The spoilers and gear have the power to slow the aircraft very rapidly from very high speeds. I have been approaching on a steep glide path and using spoilers and gear to slow to around 80-90 knots. Then I use the first notch of flaps and retrim the elevator. The final approach can be flown between 30 and 50 knots. Large turns must be avoided once slowed to 30 knots. The aircaft tends to float after the flaps are full down, I have been gradually adding flaps and using the last two settings only about 50-75 feet above the runway. The flaps can be used as a sort of "vertical thrust component". Meaning that, if you extended them too soon and are too high, then you can retract one or two notches until on a better approach and then extend them again. Once they are down the aircraft sinks very slowly at idle power. My tests show that a touchdown speed of 25 knots is possible with a good flare.
