SWSL BuddySpace Instant Messaging Setup Austin Tate 11-Nov-2003 Server: jabber.open.ac.uk Port: 5222 (default) Username: first initial followed by surname Password: initially "semserv" - alter via http://jabber.open.ac.uk/LDAP/ group Room: SWSL BuddySpace Download: http://kmi.open.ac.uk/projects/buddyspace/ SWSL Map: Place these two files in BuddySpace map directory http://www.aiai.ed.ac.uk/project/swsi/buddyspace/SWSL.gif http://www.aiai.ed.ac.uk/project/swsi/buddyspace/SWSL.gif You can use any Jabber IM client but most of us are trying BuddySpace from Marc Eisenstadt's group at the OU as we have some joint work on activity, plan and service status information XML interchange with them. Download that client (Java multi-platform) from http://kmi.open.ac.uk/projects/buddyspace/ This unpacks to a simple directory with no other changes on your OS. You just run the start script and you are away. Set your user name and password as given or as you changed it. Set the Jabber server to jabber.open.ac.uk and keep the default port of 5222. You should not set the new account tick box as your accounts are already set up and registered as part of the SWSL group. We also have a map for SWSL which you can get using the 2 files (SWSL.gif and SWSL.ygf) Put these in the maps directory of the setup. When we are in SWSL sessions we usually start up a group with name "SWSL" as a shared backchannel. This can be joined via the File -> Groupchat menu. The group conferencing server is "jabber-conference.open.ac.uk". Hope this helps get you started. P.S. we might be switching to IRC.
