Restricted Software Licence Agreement for Personal Teaching
and Research Purposes


                       The Hardy System

We are the University Court of the University of Edinburgh incorporated under
the Universities (Scotland) Acts 1858 to 1966 acting in this instance through
the Artificial Intelligence Applications Institute, The University of Edinburgh,
80 South Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1HN (referred to as "AIAI" hereafter).
AIAI is offering you a copy of the Hardy hyperdiagramming software toolkit.
By accepting a copy of the Hardy hyperdiagramming software toolkit, you
agree with AIAI as follows:


1   Definitions
 1.1 You are provided with a functionally restricted form of the Hardy hy-
     perdiagramming software toolkit (the "restricted version"). These iden-
     tified restrictions may be removed by you requesting a unique serial
     number from AIAI. When AIAI has issued you with such a unique se-
     rial number, your copy of the Hardy hyperdiagramming software toolkit
     will be treated thereafter as being fully functional (the "fully functional
     version").
 1.2 Unless the version is specified, "Hardy" will be used throughout this
     Agreement to refer to both the restricted and the fully functional ver-
     sions of Hardy.


2   Grant
 2.1 Subject to the provisions of this Agreement, AIAI grants you a non-
     exclusive licence for the use of Hardy.
 2.2 No title or ownership rights to Hardy are transferred to you by this
     Agreement.


3   Restricted Use
 3.1 AIAI hereby states that Hardy constitutes a valuable asset.
 3.2 You undertake to treat Hardy in the same manner as you treat your
     own valuable assets.
 3.3 You may make and use copies of Hardy. All such copies of Hardy shall
     include a copy of this Agreement and shall remain subject to all terms
     and conditions of this Agreement.
 3.4 You may edit, format or otherwise modify Hardy, provided that portions
     of Hardy included in a modified work shall remain subject to all terms
     and conditions of this Agreement.
 3.5 You agree to reproduce and include AIAI's copyright notice on all copies
     of Hardy or any modification of it in any form.
 3.6 If you have requested a unique serial number from AIAI to allow you to
     convert the restricted version of Hardy into the fully functional version
     of Hardy, and such a serial number has been issued to you by AIAI, you
     may not disclose that serial number to any third party.
     To eliminate doubt, you are permitted to make copies of Hardy and
     to give such copies to third parties. These parties should subsequently
     request their own unique serial numbers from AIAI because, as you
     may not disclose your unique serial number, copies of Hardy will have
     restricted functionality.
 3.7 You shall notify and inform any person having access to your copy of
     Hardy or receiving a copy of Hardy from you of your limitations, duties
     and obligations, regarding your use and copying of Hardy.
 3.8 Hardypshalluberusedponlyoforsyoureownsteaching,.training and research

     Such use explicitly excludes commercial work carried out by you for
     third parties other than government research bodies unless you receive
     prior written authorisation from AIAI.
 3.9 You undertake to report to AIAI any errors or deficiencies in Hardy that
     you encounter.

4   Term and Termination
 4.1 This Agreement shall become effective on the date and time of you
     accepting a copy of Hardy and will remain in effect without limitation
     of time.


5   Warranties and Liability

 5.1 AIAI warrants that it has the right to grant this licence.
 5.2 While AIAI has carefully developed and tested Hardy for accuracy and
     proper functioning, AIAI disclaims any responsibility for the accuracy
     or correctness of Hardy.
 5.3 The warranties of Sections 5.1 and 5.2 above are exclusive
     and in lieu of all other warranties of merchantability, fitness
     for particular purpose, and/or other type, whether express or
     implied.
 5.4 In no event shall AIAI become liable to you or any other party for any
     loss or damages, consequential or otherwise, including but not limited
     to time, money or goodwill arising from your use, operation or modifica-
     tion of Hardy. You further agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless
     AIAI, its agents or employees, from and against all loss or expense re-
     sulting from liability of any nature arising out of, or resulting from,
     your possession, use, or operation of Hardy.


6   Miscellaneous
 6.1 This Agreement constitutes and expresses the entire understanding be-
     tween you and AIAI with respect to your use of Hardy, and supersedes
     all previous communications, representations or agreements, whether
     written or oral.
 6.2 The Agreement may not be and shall not be deemed or construed to
     have been modified, amended, rescinded, cancelled or waived, in whole
     or in part, except by written instruments signed by both parties.
 6.3 This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with
     the laws of Scotland.
